Time Management In Quarantine

Personally, being at home means endless more distractions, difficulty focusing on one project, and ultimately underestimating the amount of work I have every day. When you’re accustomed to working in a certain environment, adapting to this new one can be tricky! Here are some suggestions to create the most productivity with your time:

  1. Create a Time-Blocked Daily Plan: Every morning when I wake up, I feed the dogs & have my first cup of coffee. The very next step in my routine is to create a time-blocked plan of what I need to do that day. I only began this method since quarantine started, but now I don’t think I can live without it! Here’s an article to learn more about time-blocking:

Plan Meals in Advance: I’m not talking the craziness of preparing 7 meals on Sunday and packaging them up for the week (but if you can do this, more power to you!) – but write out what meal you want to have for breakfast lunch and dinner throughout the week! This way there’s less time taken up in writing grocery lists or staring at the fridge for 15 minutes thinking, “what do I want to eat?”. Simple, time-efficient and fun! 
  3. Work in “Shifts”: If you have children, pets or anything else that requires hands on attention, try to separate those duties from your actual work. From 7am – 8am every morning, I am totally devoted to my dogs. But after that, I put on some classical music (proven to ease separation anxiety in dogs AND children), and get started with my work; no distractions (unless for emergencies, of course) will take me from that. I let the music take my “shift” of watching the dogs, but another family member or spouse would work even better! This is a difficult time we’re in, but your work & other priorities will get lost in the midst of home life if you’re not careful.
  4. Allot Time for Distractions: While it would be wonderful to think all of the above work flawlessly every day, that’s just not the case. If nothing else works for you – try to allot time for the natural distractions that come from being at home. As long as you get what needs to be done, done, you’re a superstar. 

Ultimately, every day in this global pandemic is a new scenario. If you’re just doing your best and hanging in there, give yourself a pat on the back! Hopefully these tips can help alleviate some stress and assist in time management during quarantine. Stay safe!
